Overbeck was the son of the lawyer (and consultant to Schonenfahrer Company) Georg Christian Overbeck () and his wife Eleonora Maria Jauch (), and also grandson of the superintendent Caspar Nikolaus Overbeck (). He was the nephew of the rector of the Katharineum, Johann Daniel Overbeck ().
